The History Of Precision Machining

The history of precision machining dates back to the industrial revolution, a time when manufacturers got the chance to produce extremely accurate parts. Before this, skilled artisans would use manual ways to make objects, a process that was both labor intensive and incredibly costly. Since then, there have been numerous innovations aimed at improving production processes.

What is precision machining?

Generally speaking, precision machining refers to the process of producing products that are machines and measured to exact standards. This means that all the products have to feature satisfactory limits, correct dimensions as well as tolerances and allowances. The level of precision of a given product will depend on the purpose for which it is made, with some products having more of a precise measure and cut than others.

History of precision machining

When manual labor was used to produce precision products, a lot of time and resources were spent in the production process. The quality of the products was also not guaranteed under this form of production.

Changes in the industry

Shortly after the Second World War, the industry changed unbelievably. CNC machines and modern precision machines were introduced, reducing the number of people needed to do the physical work. Rather than using manual ways of production, the machines needed computer programming. Demand for skilled labor from engineers also went up.

Effects of the changes 

The innovations and changes sought to address the problems that were previously associated with precision production. With machines that were capable of mass production and focused on details, the cost of production was significantly reduced. The accuracy with which dimensions and standards were met was enhanced, owing to the elimination of the threat of human error.

It is evident from history that precision machining has come a long way. There is no doubt that precision machining has changed significantly since it was invented. However, the principles that underlie the technology has given rise to advances in technology in the form of 3D printing.
